Connecticut BBQ: Yellow Rose BBQ Reviewed

Joints Directory Madness

Here's the latest batch of barbecue Joints directory activity, spanning six states. This time there are seven new joints, one seasonal return, one return after flood-related closure, three closings, one name change, one new website, one fixed phone number and one new Facebook link (which I add only for joints without websites).




  • Cast Iron Soul (New Haven CT) is a new soulfood joint by a husband and wife team who met while working at the now-closed Sandra's down the street. Their approach has a Louisiana slant and an attempt at more healthful soulfood. The ribs may or may not be smoked, but they're described on the menu as "the best."

  • Sandra's Next Generation (New Haven CT), coincidentally enough, is a comeback of soulfood mainstay Sandra's. Meats of interest include chopped BBQ turkey, chicken and pork, plus BBQ ribs.

  • Will Morton's Rotisserie (Greenwich CT) is hardly new and hardly a joint. It's what one Yelper calls French/BBQ fusion, though the fusion appears more widespread than that: crispy smoked pork dumplings, pulled BBQ chicken quesadillas, grilled smoked jumbo wings, Eastern North Carolina smoked BBQ sandwiches and sliced BBQ kobe beef brisket sandwiches. Buzzwords like "organic" and "free range" are all over the menu. Thanks to Robbie for the lead.

  • Highland BBQ (Northfield MA) is a new joint located just east of I-91 and a little south of the NH border. There's a quaint cottage, a few picnic tables and a menu featuring an unlikely trio of pork ribs, beef ribs and chicken.

  • Moe's Original BBQ (Bangor ME) is a "Southern soul food revival" that brought their "award-winning Alabama-style barbecue" to Bangor earlier this month. Actually, Moe's Original isn't so original, since it's part of an Alabama-based chain. But since its nearest other location is in North Carolina, I'll cut them some slack.

  • Fred's Blues & BBQ (Willimantic CT) is an offshoot of Fred's Brickyard Cafe that features five different smoked meats, a slew of typical pub food appetizers and sandwiches and live entertainment. Thanks to Douglas for the lead.

  • 3 Guys Basement BBQ (Hanover NH) is a new joint that opened earlier this week near Dartmouth College. The menu features meats by the pound (including cured pork belly). It's dinner-only for now, with lunch coming soon.




  • Grandaddy's Smokehouse (Putnam CT) is now closed. Thanks to Bill for the info.

  • Brother Jimmy's Express (NYC) has been closed for a while, though the barbecue minichain still has 5 operational branches. Thanks to Bob for the info.

  • Denver Grill (Woonsocket RI) is now closed. Thanks again to Bill for the info.




  • Kansas City Smokehouse (East Meadow NY, formerly RUB) now has a website:

  • Redbones Rib Shack (Cambridge MA), a stripped-down part-time version of the Somerville original, is not only open for the season but has a phone number for contact.

  • The Boatyard at Smokey Joe's (Stamford CT) is the new name for Smokey Joe's Ribs. According to their website (which hasn't changed), "Smokey Joe's has teamed up with The Boatyard BBQ & Grill to give you Fire On The Water: BBQ & Seafood."

  • Eddie B's Comfort Food (Portsmouth NH) has a fixed phone number and a Facebook link.

  • Chili Head BBQ (West Bridgewater MA) is now open again after being closed to repair flood-related damage. They have a new look and a new menu.






Boston 'Burbs BBQ: Texas BBQ Company Review Update

Another updated review, and shame on me for picking one that's just a few miles down the road from the last one, but sometimes it works out that way. It's for Texas BBQ Company (Northborough MA), one of the lesser known and more underrated Central Massachusetts BBQ joints. Boston 'Burbs BBQ: Firefly's Review Update

Here's an updated review for Firefly's Bodacious Bar-B-Que (Marlborough MA and Framingham MA), one of the elder statesman of Boston BBQ. With this one, I have a strong feeling that the Firefly's faithful will think I was too tough on them and the Firefly's haters will think I went too easy. What do you think? New York Burgers: Shake Shack Reviewed

It wasn't long into my regular barbecue visits to New York City that I discovered Shake Shack, the city's must-visit burger joint with a few different outposts. It's not even my preferred style (I generally seek a pub burger), but the execution and hospitality are so on that the hype is to be believed.

Joints Directory Madness

Here's the latest batch of barbecue Joints directory activity, spanning six states. This time there are five totally new joints, two expansions, three closings, one name change and two new Facebook links (for joints without websites).




  • Lone Star Bar & Grill (Brooklyn NY) claims to be "Brooklyn's only Country/Western bar." As for the grub, it's "modern American cuisine in a country western setting." Babyback ribs, BBQ chicken and pulled pork are all aon offer, though I'm not sure if they're smoked. Thanks to the Snuffer for the indirect lead.

  • Prohibition Pig (Waterbury VT) is a gastropub that, judging by a cursory examination of the website, appears to takes the gastro and the pub equally seriously. There are two dozen rotating beers on draft and a barbecue menu that calls the pork "chopped barbecue" (as they do in North Carolina). Brisket and chicken are also included, as are pork cracklins, hush puppies and a variety of seafood options. Vermont cheese is also well represented.

  • Mama T’s Country Kitchen (Rutland VT) isn't just a Texas style BBQ joint, but one setup by Texans who've moved north. Meats include brisket, sausage, babybacks, chicken, turkey and hot dogs, with pricing seemingly a steal. Thanks to Derek for the lead. Facebook

  • Grantlee's Tavern & Grill (Farmington ME) is a far north joint that bills itself as "a Civil War-themed family restaurant serving Northern and Southern-style food." Barbecue options include ribs, brisket and pulled pork. Thanks to a Boston's Hidden Restaurants online chat participant for the lead.

  • Ed's Famous BBQ (Fall River MA) is a new operation whose compact barbecue menu features babybacks, St Louis cut spares, pork and brisket. Based on the website, I'm guessing this is mostly a takeout joint.

  • MoJo's BBQ Tavern & Grill (Kittery ME) is an expansion of the Portsmouth NH flagship across the river.

  • The Farm Bar and Grill (Manchester NH) is an expansion of the Essex MA flagship, bringing the store total to four (two in MA and two in NH). Thanks to Erik ("I figured you already knew about it!") for the thin sliver of a lead.



  • Firehouse BBQ (Amesbury MA) is now closed.

  • Ribbery (Indian Orchard MA) is now closed.

  • Pig Out BBQ (Southington CT) is now closed, leaving Southington with only two joints (they once had four).




  • Dave's Cape Cod Smokehouse (Harwich MA) is the new name for the same place formerly known as Dave's Ribs.

  • Westside Steak & BBQ (Worcester MA) now has a Facebook page linked.

  • Our Town (Peterbrough NH) now has a Facebook page linked.






Boston Burgers: Grumpy White's Reviewed

"Old school" is a good phrase to describe Grumpy White's (Quincy MA), whose burgers are better described by the phrase "Like butta." It's not a burger for everybody, or even for me as a regular thing, but every now and then, it'll be something I'll crave as much for its uniqueness as its flavor.
