The bottom line: While no barbecue joint is a sure thing for greatness, Sweet Cheeks is guaranteed good, very often very good and often enough spectacular. There's still room for further improvement on the flavor front, but Sweet Cheeks does more things well and does more things really well more often than any other Boston barbecue joint.

KCs Rib Shack, Manchester NH

The bottom line: KC's Rib Shack is one of my two favorite joints in New Hampshire and one of the better barbecue joints in the entire Northeast region. Admittedly, the sides are weak, the pork is overcooked and the rub and smoke levels have dwindled. But the menu is huge and accommodating, the onion rings are off the charts, the brisket is solid, the ribs are consistently bodacious and juicy, the service is super friendly (and sometimes just as bodacious) and the value is spectacular. I haven't walked out yet without a smile on my face.

BT's Smokehouse, Sturbridge MA

The bottom line: As with the original, the indoor BT's serves up meats and sides that are intensely flavored and very different from what you’d find at your everyday barbecue joint. If you seek bold spices, crave smoke and don’t mind a little saltiness and some extra dark bark, BT’s will be right up your alley. With now-comfortable surroundings, some improvements to an already solid core product, an expanded roster of appetizers and a burger to write home about, BT's is right up my alley and a part of my regular barbecue rotation. It's worth a visit from any distance.

Jerry Remy's, Boston MA

The bottom line: There are still some minor kinks to work out, but overall, Jerry Remy's Sports Bar and Grill is a winner. The atmosphere, service and value are all there, and the barbecue is both unique and occasionally very good.

RUB (Righteous Urban Barbecue), New York City

The bottom line: RUB is serious barbecue for the serious barbecue fan. If you’re expecting to use up several napkins on soaking wet, fall-off-the-bone faux ‘cue, you’ll probably be disappointed here. But if you like extra smoky meats cooked in old school competition style, you’re in for a treat.

Hill Country, New York City

The bottom line: Hill Country seems to have hit the ground running, reaching a level of excellence in their first few days that most barbecue joints never see in a lifetime. The sides and desserts need some work, but the meats were good across the board, with the Texas holy trinity of brisket, beef ribs and sausage phenomenal.
