The RecTeq RT-700 Wood Pellet Grill: Reviewed

Main Points

Build and Materials

The RT-700 has plenty to offer in terms of functionality, but before we go into depth on that subject, it’s important to consider the physical build and materials that make up this pellet grill.

RecTeq’s RT-700 is made of stainless steel, ceramic, and powder-coated steel, which is an excellent combination for a pellet grill.

Approximately 20% of the RT-700’s construction is stainless steel, with components made of this material including: the grates, the cooking chamber, the heat deflectors, the drip pans, the firepots, the smoke cap, and even the hardware.

Stainless steel is resistant to corrosion, as are the ceramic areas and the powder coating on the steel components of the grill. This means that the RT-700 will comfortably withstand repeated outdoor use and isn’t likely to succumb to damage from damp while in storage.

Plus, the longevity of stainless steel and powder-coated steel ensures that the RT-700 will serve you well for many years to come. RecTeq has previously stated that their intention with the construction of its grills is for the unit to be passed down through families, and that’s definitely reflected in this build.

Cooking Surfaces

Let’s focus specifically on the cooking surfaces (grates) included with the RT-700 for a moment. After all, this is the part of the grill that will make or break your cooking experience, so it’s important to prioritize high quality.

Luckily, high quality is exactly how we’d describe the grates that come with the RT-700. They’re 100% stainless steel, so they’re easy to clean and not susceptible to either corrosion or wear and tear.

The grate measures 702 square inches, which is a pretty high capacity, considering the fact that a large grill generally offers about 600 square inches of cooking space. To put that into perspective, you could grill an entire turkey on the RT-700.

You also have the option of buying the extra, slightly smaller grate sold by RecTeq and placing it on top of the main cooking surface. This gives you an additional 352 square inches of room for food!

It’s not just the surface area of the cooking space that’s impressive, but also the gorgeous sear marks you can expect from the stainless steel grate.

If you’re planning to rely on your new pellet grill to cook for large gatherings of people, the RT-700 is one model you should absolutely consider.

Smoking Technology

A wood pellet grill is designed, first and foremost, for smoking. We know that the quality of the build is excellent and that there’s plenty of cooking space, but how well does the RT-700 actually perform?

RecTeq has designed ‘The Bull’ to surpass expectations when it comes to taste and texture with its advanced smoking technology.

The RT-700 uses Smart Grill Technology, which is built into the controller protruding from the side of the grill. Using the Smart Grill Technology controller, you’ll be able to select the perfect temperature and trust that it will stay within your desired range.

Many pellet grills on the market struggle to maintain regular and even temperatures throughout the cooking process. However, the RT-700’s advanced technology allows it to adjust its consumption of wood pellets automatically.

This ensures that it meets your temperature requirements as quickly as possible (in roughly 10 minutes). Plus, since the RT-700 has the ability to reduce the pace of pellet consumption as the temperature increases, the grill won’t surpass your selected temperature. Pellet consumption is also activated automatically when the lid is lifted, meaning that heat isn’t easily lost.

We love this function because it means that your cookouts will run smoothly and your smoked meats will come off the grill looking and tasting just like you intended.

Something else we wanted to highlight about the RT-700 is how accurate the temperature settings are. You can turn the heat up or down in increments of 5°F which, considering that this grill has a temperature range of 300°F (between 200°F and 500°F), is very precise.

Thanks to this level of accuracy, you can easily set up your pellet grill to produce results compatible with your specific taste and texture preferences.

WiFi Functionality

Now, it’s true that the RT-700 has a pretty sizable price tag attached to it. However, in our opinion, there are good reasons for this, one of which is the WiFi connectivity that the RT-700 offers.

Once you’ve purchased your new pellet grill, you can go into the app store for Apple or Google Play and download the RecTeq app

RecTeq’s app allows RT-700 owners to control and monitor the grill remotely. You can adjust the temperature from a distance and even set alarms so that you know when to check on your food.

There are also more advanced settings available via the app that allow for temperature calibration and charting based on the readings from the meat probes (see below).

Additionally, you can use the RecTeq app to check out recipes and find new, creative ways to make the most of your RT-700.

The RecTeq app makes using the RT-700 much easier, especially if you’re hosting a large gathering and want to be able to socialize while waiting for your food.

Additional Features

We’ve covered the benefits of the RT-700’s main features, but the review isn’t over yet! The RT-700 comes with several additional features that improve the overall user experience.

From tools for temperature readings to ergonomic accessories, the accessories that come included with the RT-700 are just another reason to invest in this wood pellet grill today.

(Please note that the features listed below come with the grill when purchased via the RecTeq website. Other accessories have previously been available as part of an Amazon bundle, but as of right now, this bundle is unavailable).

Meat Probes

The first and most important additional feature included with the RT-700 is the pair of meat probes.

The fact that the RT-700 comes with not one but two meat probes means that you can always monitor the temperature of all the meat on your grill, even if you choose to invest in an extra shelf (see below).

As we mentioned previously, the temperature readings from the meat probes can then be entered into the RecTeq app, allowing you to chart the temperature of your food for precise monitoring.

Tool Hooks

When you’re not using your meat probes, you can rely on the included tool hooks to keep your accessories safe until you need them again.

If you’ve ever hosted a cookout, you’ll know how much of a struggle it can be to keep your hands free for long enough to get things done. Between flipping the meat, refilling drinks, and plating up, grilling can sometimes feel like a juggling act.

The tool hooks included with the RT-700 are snag-free, meaning they won’t catch on your clothes (which could potentially be disastrous).

There are 4 hooks in total, so you can hang up your meat probes along with two other tools of your choice.

Towel Ring

In addition to the tool hooks, the RT-700 comes with a convenient towel ring.

Having a tea towel on hand is essential during a cookout, whether for protecting your hands from hot items or wiping up spillages.

With the towel ring built into the RT-700, you can keep your towel clean and easily accessible until you need to use it.

Hopper Lid/Warmer

While the pellet hopper built into the RT-700 doesn’t have a hatch for pellet removal, which could be viewed as an inconvenience, the grill does come with a stainless steel hopper lid.

The lid has handles on either side for easy removal and replacement, but the real benefit of this feature is that it actually doubles as a warmer.

A warmer is a really useful feature to have if you’re the proud owner of a pellet grill. This is an accessory that will ensure your food stays warm when you take it off the grill, so everyone at the cookout can relax without worrying about food temperatures.

Interior Light

Inside the grill, you’ll notice a light that’s designed to make cooking safer and easier, even when lighting conditions aren’t optimal.

It’s not unusual for pellet grills to come with some form of interior lighting, but what makes this light stand out from the rest is the fact that the glass lens over the bulb is dishwasher-safe.

Since the light is located inside the grill, it’s likely to be exposed to food remnants or general debris during the cooking process.

For this reason, it’s helpful to be able to detach the lens from the grill and run it through the dishwasher, ensuring that it stays clear enough for effective lighting.

Optional Accessories (Sold Separately)

The following accessories are not included with the purchase of the RT-700, but they are compatible with the unit and can be purchased separately to further enhance your grilling experience.

Although these technically aren’t features of the RT-700, the fact that RecTeq provides its customer base with these options demonstrates a focus on user experience and customer satisfaction.

Smokebox

One of the most popular accessories from RecTeq that is compatible with the RT-700 is the smokebox

The smokebox is made of powder-coated steel, which indicates a high level of durability. It has 3 grates made of stainless steel and can be bolted onto the RT-700 (or the RT-680/RT-1250) using the included hardware.

This smokebox includes 2 door-mounted thermometers for easy monitoring.

Grill Covers

RecTeq provides several grill covers through its website, many of which are compatible with the RT-700.

A grill cover is a really important accessory, regardless of where you keep your grill when it’s not in use. Many people opt to leave their grills outside, which is fine as long as you have a high-quality, wear-resistant cover to keep it safe from the elements.

Even though the RT-700 is made of corrosion-resistant materials, it’s still best to keep it safe from excessive exposure to water.

The need for protection still applies if you choose to store your grill in an indoor space such as a garage. Even if it’s sheltered from the rain, it could still be exposed to moisture from damp air or dust particles.

This custom-fit cover for the RT-700 is constructed using 2 layers of material, which is resistant to water and cracking thanks to the thick polyester lining and tough PVC upper layer.

Extra Shelves

The RT-700 can be easily adapted in terms of shelf space. In fact, using the bolts on the unit’s legs, you can insert an entire extra shelf, giving you more room to plate up your food.

An example of one of the RecTeq shelves you can buy directly from the manufacturer is the RT-700 Front Folding Shelf

This shelf measures 12 inches by 34 inches, providing a total of 408 square inches of organization and plating space.

It’s finished with brushed stainless steel, which is resistant to scratching and will stay looking sleek and shiny for years as long as you clean it well.

Griddle

If you want to use your RT-700 to cook at lower temperatures, we recommend investing in a compatible griddle, available through the RecTeq website.

The Large Flat Top Griddle from RecTeq is compatible with the RT-700 as well as several other RecTeq grill models.

This griddle is made from carbon steel, which is durable and easy to clean. Since the sides of the griddle are raised, you won’t need to worry about grease overflowing, and thanks to the built-in lifting handles, it’s easy to maneuver without accident or injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I clean the RT-700?

Although we definitely believe that the RT-700 is worth the money, it’s true that it’s not exactly the cheapest pellet grill on the market. Therefore, cleaning and maintenance are even more important to ensure longevity for your money.

The good news is, the RT-700 doesn’t need cleaning as often as some other pellet grills on the market. While some grills need cleaning after every use, the self-cleaning mode means that you only need to manually clean the RT-700 every 4 uses on average.

When it comes time to clean your grill, the first step is going to be removing any leftover pellets. Remember: there’s no hatch or door for this purpose, so you’ll have to use some kind of scooping utensil or a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner.

Next, you’ll need to clean the cooking surfaces (grates) and drip tray. This shouldn’t take too long because the stainless steel construction is easy to wipe down.

What is the warranty for the RT-700?

The warranty for the RT-700 is one of the best on the market when it comes to pellet grills. The RT-700 comes with a bumper-to-bumper warranty for a period of 6 years. Yes, you heard that right - 6 years!

Because the warranty is all-inclusive, it covers any faults or problems you may have with your RT-700 within the first 6 years after your purchase.

This warranty applies whether you purchase the RT-700 directly from RecTeq or via Amazon because the package, in both cases, is sent from RecTeq’s manufacturing facility.

Which pellets are the RT-700 compatible with?

Even though RecTeq does have its own range of wood pellets, which work beautifully in the RT-700, you don’t have to use RecTeq’s pellets.

The RT-700 is compatible with wood pellets from all brands. With that being said, we highly recommend that you try RecTeq’s own wood pellets. They’re some of the best on the market, and you can purchase them from RecTeq’s site today.

Final Thoughts

We have very few complaints when it comes to the RecTeq RT-700. If you’re in the market for a well-built, durable pellet grill that produces high-quality food, this model should definitely be on your list.

Complete with app connectivity and convenience-enhancing accessories, the RT-700 ensures a stress-free, delicious outdoor cooking experience.

The only real room for improvement, as far as we can see, is the lack of hopper hatch for cleaning purposes. However, the automatic cleaning function helps to make up for this.

We can see why the RT-700 is one of the most popular wood pellet grills on the market, and we’d encourage you to get one of your own.
